General
What is Data4Good?
Data4Good is a UK social enterprise, established in 2025, that connects data volunteers with charities and non-profits who need insight from their data. Volunteers work in supervised teams on real projects, so charities get skilled help and volunteers gain genuine experience. You can read more about us.
Is Data4Good free to join?
Yes, Data4Good is a free volunteering platform. There is no membership fee and nothing to pay to join the waitlist or take part in projects. Our work is supported by partners and sponsors who fund hackathons, student grants and charity projects.
Why is there a waitlist?
We are currently at capacity for new volunteers, so you can only join our waitlist for now. We want every volunteer to be properly supported and every charity project to be well supervised, so we open places gradually. We will contact you as soon as places become available.
Is Data4Good a registered charity?
Data4Good is a social enterprise rather than a registered charity. We exist to put data skills to work for the charity sector, and we work with charities and non-profits across the UK. Our legal details are set out in our privacy notice.
What kinds of projects does Data4Good run?
We run three kinds of activity: one-off projects, ongoing support for charities, and data challenges or hackathons. Each project is carried out by a supervised team of volunteers. Typical work includes cleaning data, building dashboards, analysing surveys and helping a charity understand its impact.
How do I get in touch with Data4Good?
Email team@data4good.co.uk and we will reply as soon as we can. If you want to volunteer, ask for charity support or discuss a partnership, using the relevant form on this website helps us route your message to the right person.
Volunteering
Can I volunteer as a data analyst for a charity in the UK?
Yes. Data4Good places data volunteers with UK charities and non-profits, working in supervised teams. We are currently at capacity, so you can join our waitlist and we will contact you when places open. Students, recent graduates, professionals and career changers are all welcome to apply.
Do I need experience to volunteer with Data4Good?
No, you do not need to be an expert. We welcome students, recent graduates, professionals and career changers, and projects are supervised so you are supported. When you join the waitlist you tell us your role and skills, which helps us match you to suitable work.
What skills do data volunteers need?
Useful skills include data analysis, spreadsheets, SQL, Python or R, data visualisation, research and clear communication. Not everyone needs all of them, because projects are done in teams. Tell us about your strengths on the waitlist form and we will look for a good fit.
How much time does volunteering take?
It depends on the project. One-off projects usually run for a set number of weeks with a few hours of volunteering each week, while hackathons take place over a short, fixed period. We will explain the expected time before you commit, so you can decide whether it fits around work or study.
Can I volunteer remotely?
Yes, most volunteering is designed to work remotely, so you can take part from anywhere in the UK. Some events, such as hackathons, may take place in person at a specific location. Details are shared on each event page.
Will volunteering help my career?
Volunteering with Data4Good gives you real project experience, teamwork and something concrete to talk about in applications and interviews. Our partners and sponsors may also be interested in meeting talented volunteers. We cannot promise a job, but the experience can be a strong step forward.
For charities
How much does it cost for a charity to get data help from Data4Good?
Support is free for small charities. Our volunteers give their time and partners and sponsors fund the wider programme. Larger organisations may be asked to contribute towards the cost of a project, and we always agree this before any work starts. To ask for help, complete the support request form.
What kind of data help can a charity ask for?
Charities can ask for help with things like cleaning and organising data, analysing surveys or service data, building dashboards, measuring impact and preparing evidence for funding bids. You can ask for a one-off project, ongoing support or a data challenge. The support request form lets you describe what you need.
Does my charity need to be registered?
No, you do not need to be a registered charity. Registered charities, community groups and other non-profits can all ask for help. The form has an optional field for your charity number if you have one, which helps us understand your organisation.
How do I request support for my charity?
Fill in the support request form on our charities page with your name, email, organisation and a description of what you need. We will review it and get back to you. The more detail you give about your data and your goals, the better we can match you.
Who looks after my charity’s data during a project?
Your charity remains in control of its data. Volunteers work in supervised teams and are expected to follow our data protection rules and to handle any data you share carefully. We will agree with you what data is shared and how before work starts.
How quickly will I hear back after sending a request?
We aim to reply to charity requests within a few working days. We then talk through your needs and, if the project is a good fit, match you with a volunteer team as places allow. Volunteer capacity is currently limited, so some projects may start later.
Partners & sponsors
How can my organisation partner with Data4Good?
Organisations can partner with Data4Good by sponsoring a hackathon, funding student grants or supporting charity projects. To start the conversation, send us a message through the partnership enquiry form and tell us what you are interested in.
What do partners and sponsors get in return?
Partners help fund hackathons, student grants and charity projects, and gain access to a talent pool of data volunteers for recruitment. They are also visibly associated with practical, social impact work. The exact benefits depend on the type of partnership we agree together.
Which events can partners sponsor?
Our planned events include The North-East Varsity Hackathon, The 1st Annual Oxbridge Hackathon and The Great Energy Industry Hackathon. Details are still to be confirmed. Get in touch through the partnership form to find out about sponsorship opportunities.
Can we recruit through Data4Good?
Partners can gain access to our talent pool of data volunteers, including students, graduates and career changers, for recruitment. We will explain how introductions work when we discuss your partnership, and volunteers always decide for themselves whether to be introduced.
Are there standard terms for sponsorship?
Yes. We have standard partnership terms that set out what partners fund and what we deliver in return. We will share them with you once you have made an enquiry, and we are happy to talk through any questions before you decide.
Data protection & safety
What personal data does the Data4Good website collect?
Only what you give us through our forms, such as your name, email, role and skills, or your organisation and message. The site sets no cookies by default and has no advertising or tracking cookies. Our privacy notice explains exactly what we collect and why.
Does Data4Good use cookies?
No, the website does not set cookies by default, and there are no advertising or tracking cookies. If we enable analytics, we use a privacy-friendly, cookieless tool. Fonts are hosted on our own site, so visitors’ browsers do not call Google Fonts.
Where is my data stored?
Form submissions are stored in a secure database hosted in the UK and EU (London region). The website is hosted by Hostinger, and some submissions may be emailed to our team inbox. Our privacy notice lists the providers we use.
Can I ask Data4Good to delete my data?
Yes. You can ask us to delete your data, and to see it, correct it or stop us using it, by emailing team@data4good.co.uk. We will respond within one month. There may be limited cases where we must keep information, and we will explain if so.
How is charity data kept safe in volunteer projects?
Volunteers agree to follow data protection and confidentiality rules before working on any project, and teams are supervised. Charities decide what data is shared. We encourage using anonymised or aggregated data wherever possible, so personal information is only shared when truly needed.
Are volunteers background checked?
Volunteers sign up to our handbook and data protection terms, and work in supervised teams. Because volunteers work with data rather than directly with vulnerable people, enhanced background checks are not normally required. If a project needed more, we would agree this with the charity first.
